So you’re probably wondering . . .

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy may be just what you need!

Yoga Therapy is so many things, but at it’s core, Yoga Therapy is about using the tools and practices of Yoga in order to help the client become a healthier, happier, better version of themselves. According to the International Association of Yoga Therapists, “Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga.”

Yoga Therapy is Goal Oriented. Through Yoga Therapy sessions, we work to make progress toward a specific desired goal of the client. Whether that be to decrease stress/anxiety, improve sleep, address musculoskeletal symptoms (low back pain, poor posture, etc.), or whatever else you can imagine!

Yoga Therapy is Individualized. Yoga Therapy is primarily a one-on-one practice, with the Yoga Therapist working directly with one single client. This ensures that we can work in depth to understand the client and their experience, as well as formulate a completely unique and personalized goal, plan, and home practice to help that client meet their desired goal(s).

Yoga Therapy is a Commitment. In the words of my teachers, “as with any empowerment-based healing modality, change happens over time and the goal is to create sustainable, positive, health behavior change.” And thus, Yoga Therapy is a commitment. We ask that clients commit to at least 5 sessions to begin with, in order to fully and deeply address and understand their unique experiences, as well as to be able to provide a beneficial and realistic home practice which they can continue to integrate for years to come.

FAQs

How is Yoga therapy different from Yoga?

Yoga Therapy is very different from your standard yoga classes. As stated above, Yoga Therapy is a personalized, goal oriented, commitment. Whereas you might go to a regular group yoga class to get a workout, or unwind and relax after a stressful day, clients seek out Yoga Therapy in order to specifically work toward improving certain aspects of their life. Yoga Therapy is a very wholistic approach to wellness, looking at all aspects and factors that may be contributing to the undesirable symptoms or experience(s).

What should I expect out of a Yoga Therapy session?

Every Yoga Therapy session will be different! While we may occasionally repeat some tests, movements, or poses, each session will be different and unique to you and your experience when we meet. Life is crazy as it is, and as I say in nearly every Yin class, our bodies are different every single day and even from one side to the other. That being said, my teaching and working philosophy is largely based on understanding and accepting our bodies as they are, wherever we maybe on our journey through life.

What is Yoga therapy good for?

Yoga Therapy is great for SO many things. . . The easier question would probably be what is Yoga Therapy not good for?

Truth be told, Yoga Therapy could and would benefit the majority of people, especially in today’s society. While Yoga Therapy cannot and does not replace the need for traditional Western Medicine and certified healthcare professionals , it can certainly serve as an amazing counterpart, especially in traumatic and stressful times.

Clients may seek out Yoga Therapy for any number of reasons from more day-to-day occurrences like reducing and managing stress, to more dire situations such as learning to accept and still appreciate life after a debilitating accident.
